Steam Cleaning the Bathroom

Sometimes it grosses me out when I think about all the other people who have lived in my apartment. I trust it because of the vigorous cleaning required between each tenant by my property management company. However, you still know that many, many people have called this place home.

When I moved in I was really impressed with how meticulously clean it was. I still cleaned it before I moved in for peace of mind, and I’ve been happy for the past year.

However, my bathroom and kitchen have this…interesting….linoleum flooring pattern that I’ve noticed hides way too much. No matter how much I have mopped and scrubbed, my bathroom had some discolored places on it. After looking at it recently, I decided that was gross (oh you know, after I’ve been living with it for 11 months).

I’ve always wanted a steam cleaner for floors, and I knew this was the perfect time to try something to try to get rid of those dark spots.

I picked the HomeRight SteamMachine Plus. I picked this one because:

  1. I’ve worked with HomeRight products before (my painted rug) and know they are quality.
  2. It not only is a floor steam cleaner with a handle but it becomes a handheld with lots of attachments.

When I got it, it was easy to put together and easy to use. I immediately got to steaming the floors in the upright position. I definitely saw that it was cleaning the floor well and was picking up all sorts of grime and hair.

I saw the dark spots reduce but they were still there, so I need it was time to use the handheld and the more aggressive brush attachments.

Oh my goodness, I was amazed at how it worked! With minimal scrubbing and effort those spots were gone! Although, it did get steamy; hence, no jacket in the second picture. 🙂

It must have been caked on dirt built up for years but now it is gone! The more I looked, the more white lines were grey. I am now proud to say that they are all white now!

This is where it was the worst! Just caked on – now gone!

The corners are where it was worst – and now is spotless! A little hard to tell in pictures with this busy pattern but it really makes a difference in person! Plus, I can feel the clean on my bare feet. I know, I know, call me crazy but it’s true!

Since I was on such a steam cleaning kick in the bathroom, I decided to tackle the shower too. My shower has that grippy stuff attached to the bottom, and I was always curious how clean that can really get with sprays (since you can’t scrub in between the raised portions).

I used the handheld with the brush attachment again and literally saw dirt wash away from the bottom! It’s really hard to tell with pictures, but I was pleased with how it worked. Plus, I was also able to get rid of some built up mildew/shower scum on the sides.

I am SO happy with how easy this was – and the results are great! You can see how grimy the floor was with the removable and washable (!!) mop pad. That doesn’t even include all the dust and hair it got up that I decided not to show here because…gross.

HomeRight Steam Machine Plus Giveaway

I love it so much I want to share one with you! HomeRight is giving a SteamMachine Plus away!

Just post a comment below telling me where you would use it by Monday, October 26 at 11:59pm EST.

Thank you to HomeRight for sponsoring this post and helping me actually get my bathroom clean! All opinions are all my own.

  • I could see in the pictures the difference in the grout lines in the vinyl. I also know what you mean when you say that you could feel how clean it felt with your feet.

I could really use this at the lake where we will have two bathrooms with vinyl flooring and the rest laminate. I’m sure it will get quite dirty, especially until our grass starts growing.ReplyCancel

    • Yes, you really can see how white the laminate got on the grout lines part. Yay! Makes me feel better about my bathroom. 🙂 This would be awesome for your lakehouse!ReplyCancel

    • Yes! You really can see the difference on the white parts. Makes me feel so much better about my bathroom! 🙂 I definitely think this would be great for your lakehouse!ReplyCancel

  • OMG I am so glad you put this post up. I have a funky time getting the floor in my bathroom clean along with my shower floor. I have the raised bumpy things as well and it is so hard to keep clean. I am so wanting one of these. I would certainly use it in both of my bathrooms since they have the same flooring and tub bottom. I wonder if it could also be used for spot cleaning carpet? The endless possibilities for using this steamer.

Thank you for sharing. I am super excited to check this product out now.

    • I’m so glad you found this helpful! It sounds like it would be great for your bathroom for sure! And yes, it works for carpets! It actually comes with an carpet attachment to help it slide over it.ReplyCancel

I would love to use the home right steammachine plus on my the bathroom and kitchen floors in my new apartment! It’s an older home (built in the 1930s) and I know that linoleum could use a good cleaning. Also, we have similarly patterned (a.k.a. “interesting”) floors. 😉ReplyCancel

    • Ooo your place sounds so cool! I can’t wait to see it!! Especially those interesting floors! 😉ReplyCancel

  • Our home was a foreclosure that had been vacant for three years, so it needed some SERIOUS cleaning once we got our keys! We actually spent a month cleaning, painting, prepping and fixing before we moved in, but there are still places I know need a good scrubbing.

I would definitely use this in the kitchen, where the linoleum floor has seen better days! Glad you found something that worked well for you.ReplyCancel

    • Wow! You definitely put some backbreaking work into your home before you got to move in and enjoy! This would hopefully make cleaning those floors easier!ReplyCancel

  • Deb Belohlavy

I would use same as you. Moved from house to apt about 2 months ago and the floor are gross throughout. Would love to be able to walk barefoot…ReplyCancel

    • You SO need this. It’s important to be able to walk barefoot at home!ReplyCancel

  • Kim

Hah! With 3 kids, a dog, 3 cats and lovely Virginia red clay being tracked into my house daily, where wouldn’t I use it??! I am especially curious to know if it would clean the grout between the kitchen floor tiles well! Thanks for this opportunity!ReplyCancel

    • Wow! You would get some great use out of it! I love Virginia but that clay, right?! I definitely think it would work great with grout. The first time you may need to get the attachments out and scrub though. They would definitely get into that grime in the grout.ReplyCancel

  • Dorothy McG

Megan, I would use it in my first floor bathroom shower. We had the shower tiled about 15 years ago. They are still pretty but the grout is almost grey and has to be bleached regularly. I have heard that the HomeRight steam cleaner does a great job on bathroom grout. Thanks for the opportunity!ReplyCancel

    • Ooo that sounds like a great use for it. If it made for less bleaching of tile that would be a total win!ReplyCancel

  • Deb

I would use it on both bathrooms. I live with my senior citizen father of 93 years old. Would be nice to clean up the bathroom floors after they were soiled! Kitchen as well. The machine sounds convincing!ReplyCancel

    • It is a really good machine! Sounds like it would really help you out!ReplyCancel

  • Carol

Eww. That shower was pretty gross. Looks good now. Would love one of those steam cleaners.ReplyCancel

  • Carol

That orange stuff in your shower is mold and soap scum. All you need to do is clean it once a week with comet bathroom spray cleaner.ReplyCancel

  • Candy Walsh

WOW! That thing is a BEAST! To be honest, my entire house could use it right now! For the past couple of months I have really let things go and I used to be major OCD about cleaning top to bottom once a week. But in the past several years I’ve developed several chronic pain diseases and other health issues and I’m only 49 yrs old. So it’s very hard not to do things like I used to. But just to be able to keep my floors clean enough to walk without slippers would be awesome!!
The good Lord willing I’ll be keeping my first grandbaby who’s due in December when my daughter goes back to work, so it would be nice to keep it nice and shiny clean for him.
Thanks so much for the opportunity!ReplyCancel

    • Hi Candy! I’m so sorry to hear about your health problems. Hopefully you are on the upward swing now. And how exciting you might be able to keep your new grand baby! That makes everything better! I can imagine all the messes he will make that this would help out with! 🙂ReplyCancel

  • Debbie

Megan, I can really see the difference in your floors! Once a year I pay to have our grout steam cleaned. This would save money! I would also try it on our molded shower floor. Sounds like it could work wonders. Thanks for sharing!ReplyCancel

    • I bet this could really help your grout stay clean all year. Maybe you wouldn’t have to pay to get them cleaned. That would be awesome!!ReplyCancel

  • Aubrey Claybrook

This is amazing! We just bought a house and I would LOVE something like this to clean the floors 🙂ReplyCancel

    • Hi Aubrey! I first want to say, I love your name! My last name is Aubrey and love it as a first name. I hope to pass it on to my someday children one day. 🙂 Anyways, this sounds like it would be great for your new house!ReplyCancel

      • Aubrey Claybrook

Haha that is awesome it’s your last name…I’ve never heard it as a last name before, I love it! I’m crossing my fingers I can win this 🙂 With our new house, of course we can’t change out the flooring immediately and I’m a clean freak hahaReplyCancel

        • I totally get that with floors! I can’t believe it took me so long to be so thorough. You’re good to get on it first thing!

I never really heard of Aubrey as a first name until a couple of years ago! Just goes to show… 🙂ReplyCancel

  • Margaret McRae Davis

I’m just seeing this; always a day late and a dollar short!!!!!ReplyCancel
