Hey there friend. Yes, you! Thanks for taking the time out of your busy schedule and growing to-do list to read this blog post.

Since we are having a moment here together, I am going to ask you something. I am going to ask you to stop . To stop and breathe. To embrace this one small moment we are having together. A moment to look around at all the good surrounding you. A moment to not think about what’s next (that will always be there) but to look at what’s now (that is what is fleeting).

This is a reminder to you to take in the specialness of what your life is. Don’t think your life is special? Well I’m here to tell you it is. It is special because you are special. There is only one of you and that is the most special thing of all.

So stop comparing for this one moment and embrace you. Embrace your life, your family,  your friends, your own special moments.

I did that this weekend – all weekend. I decided to just live. Not to further my busyness by adding to my list, my stuff, my plans. But to stop and just do what makes me happy.

Welcome in the Moment | www.rappsodyinrooms.com

Yes, I completely get it. There are lots of things we have to do all the time and other people we have to think of before ourselves. But not in this very moment here. Try and hold onto these moments. The more you hold onto them the longer they will occur until you have minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, years of special moments. Your special moments will turn into your life. For no matter what is pulling at you this moment, there is something uniquely special in it. We just need to recognize it.

Here are some of my special moments I lived this weekend.

I woke up early and breathed in the morning air in that calm that only happens with the first rays of sunshine.

I planted flowers that seem to welcome me every time I come home. They make me smile as I care for them like living, breathing members of my family.

I went on a walk with a close friend and her new baby.

Take a walk to enjoy your day. | www.rappsodyinrooms.comI cleaned. I stopped my projects, even though I love them, they needed to be put on pause. It was time to give them space, rest, and myself a clean, sparkling house.

We threw a cookout complete with the best spinach artichoke dip ever.

We took time to drive through the Blue Ridge Parkway with the wind as our music and the rolling mountains as our entertainment.

We stopped to marvel at the noise of a waterfall.

I made my favorite veggie soup.

I planted our garden (which is mainly beans with a few bonus hills of squash and melon). #knowwhatgrows

Those are my moments – just a few. I’m working on taking more of them in throughout my days. I would love to hear your moments too!

Also, I’d love to hear about what you think about this post. Yes, it’s a little out of the norm of what you are used to seeing here but it’s what’s in my heart and I wanted to share with you. You like? Not like? Want more? Want less?

  • what a great reminder! i totally agree we need to take these moments just to LIVE and LOVE sometimes! great post!ReplyCancel

    • Thanks Cassie! I am definitely trying to live my life in the moment and love every second of it instead of tirelessly working for the future. I don’t want to get to the future and feel like I missed out!ReplyCancel

  • I’m always thankful for a gentle reminder to stop, breathe and simply soak up my surroundings. After hearing about a tragedy last night (easy to do, you know — especially if you’re watching the news), I was lifted from a recent funk by counting my blessings instead of my “troubles” (which, in the scheme of things, are hardly troubles at all). Sometimes we all need to take a break, relax and let things go. Glad you enjoyed your weekend!ReplyCancel

    • I love that Meg! I think counting your blessings is such a good way to deal with all the troubles that surround us. So glad you were able to find a way to deal with a tragedy so positively!ReplyCancel

  • Patrice

You have no idea how much I needed this. I have been consumed with some wrongs done to me over 50 yrs ago. I need to get back to the present. I will go to my garden, and get it ready for planting. That is one of my favourite things to do. Thank you for reminding me to wake up and smell the roses.
    PatriceReplyCancel

    • Oh Patrice! This makes me so happy to hear! I’m so glad that this post was what you needed. I was hoping it would be helpful and uplifting!ReplyCancel

  • I love this post, Megan! I so need this reminder that it’s okay to just stop and do what I enjoy. I always have such GUILT. The blog guilt, the house guilt, and so on. I have the hardest time not feeling bad about working on stuff that I find myself sometimes not really enjoying my fun time. I need to just remind myself it’s okay to just have fun sometimes and let that stuff go for a bit!ReplyCancel

    • I totally understand about the guilt Jena. But it has got to go! We do not need to feel guilty about living our lives! So glad you liked the post!ReplyCancel

  • Love this post, Megan! This is exactly what I plan to do this weekend, take lots of moments! Thanks friend for the reminder.ReplyCancel

    • Thank you Sonya! It sounds like you have a great weekend planned! Have happy moments!ReplyCancel

  • I’m hoping to take in lots of moments this weekend. I’m so tired from the week and I’m determined not to work myself to death this weekend.ReplyCancel

    • I definitely hope you get your moments Paula! It’s hard to be a blogger with another full time job. You have so much to fit into a weekend. Hope you were able to just enjoy!ReplyCancel

Now THIS is a burger made for vegetarians. Imagine, a warm summer night, friends gathered, laughter floating in the air, fireflies twinkling in the black night, and a delicious cupcake/brownie/frosted burger in your hand. Yup, that about sums up a perfect summer night, right?

How to make cupcake and brownie dessert burgers! | www.rappsodyinrooms.com

Today we are wrapping up our summer soiree series! I’ve developed a formula for preparing for summer soirees: I call it the three “C’s”. We started with Cleaning, continued with Creating, and are finishing with Cooking!

I’ve shared this recipe here before but it is my (and my guests) favorite recipe so I thought it was worth dusting off and photographing again. Plus I am able to share with you one of my Create trays in use. Win!

Presenting…Burger Cupcakes!

Ingredients

  • Yellow cake mix (and items indicated to make them)
  • Brownie Mix (and items indicated to make them)
  • Cream Cheese Frosting (white)
  • Red, green, and yellow food coloring

Directions:

  • Bake cupcakes according to directions. Make sure you cook them in the cupcake liners (otherwise they will cook too dark on the outside and won’t look good).
  • Bake brownies according to directions. Once cooked and cooled, use a cup (or any circular object) to cut small circles of brownies.

Can we get a round of YUMS?! I wish all of you could come on over, hang out in the back porch, and eat up these delicious little morsels! If we can’t have that I hope you can make them at your home and share with your family and friends. Let me tell you, nothing puts a light in someone’s eye like when they see these little burgers, and ask curiously, “Are those burgers?” And then you get to explain they are dessert burgers and everyone’s life gets a little sweeter because of it.

Here’s to making life a little sweeter however we can!

  • What an adorable dessert! They really do look like a cheeseburger!ReplyCancel

    • Thank you Paula! It is surprising how they really do look like mini cheeseburgers! Every once in a while people will be weirded out about trying one because they think their expectations of meat and bread will alter their taste. But it never does. Who doesn’t love a cupcake layered with a brownie?!ReplyCancel

  • Oh my, they DO look just like a hamburger! Super cute … such a fun idea!
    Blessings,

    • Thanks Cindy! I was surprised the first time I made them how much they looked like cheeseburgers! Thankfully they don’t taste like them!ReplyCancel

Welcome back to part two (of three) of this preparing for summer soirees series (how do you like that alliteration?!).  The first part of the series started with the first “C” of the series: cleaning (porches). Now we are on to the second “C” of preparing for outdoor entertaining: creating! This may be my favorite yet!

Whenever we entertain I like to use something that is personal, handmade, or meaningful. I think it makes a thoughtful gathering. Thankfully, you can make something once and use it all summer (or even all year).

How to make versatile outdoor entertaining trays | www.rappsodyinrooms.com

I am SO excited to share with you today these versatile outdoor entertaining reversible trays. They are easy to make, extremely useful, and are like a chameleon – they can really morph into whatever you need them for at that time.

Here are some ideas on how to use them:

  • Eating trays for when you run out of table space and guests are perched in chairs trying to balance their food and drink.
  • A hors d‘oeurves, dessert, or drink tray that can move from room to room.
  • An afternoon tea and cookie tray for a drop-in from a friend.
  • A children’s chalkboard to stay entertained while those adults talk (and talk and talk and talk).
  • Breakfast (or any other meal) in bed tray.
  • A laptop desk when everyone leaves.

Now that we have a bunch of ways to use them, let’s get to how to make them with these oh-so simple steps!

Materials:

  • A 18x48x1 board
  • Sander
  • Various paints (including chalkboard paint)
  • Stain (optional)
  • Painters tape and brush
  • Clear protective gloss spray
  • 4 inch bolts (4)
  • Corresponding nuts (12)
  • Screw Eyes (8) that bolts can thread through

Directions on How to Make Trays:

1. When picking up your wood, have them cut it down for you in-store. I had them cut two 20 inch pieces to make two trays.

How to make versatile outdoor entertaining trays | www.rappsodyinrooms.com

2. Sand down the sides, edges, and corners so they are smooth and rounded. Clean boards thoroughly.

How to make versatile outdoor entertaining trays | www.rappsodyinrooms.com

3. Paint one side of each of the pieces of wood with chalkboard paint. I did three coats.

How to make versatile outdoor entertaining trays | www.rappsodyinrooms.com

4. When dry, paint the other side of the wood. I used painters tape and paint samples (free! Find those coupons in magazines for free paint samples at Lowe’s!). I did a different pattern on each but kept the same color palette so they looked like a pair.  As a bonus (and to try to help cover any paint drips on the side) I took a dark walnut stain and stained the sides.

5. Once dry, use a clear protective gloss spray paint to cover the paint side and stained area. This will protect the tray from spills.

Directions on How to Make Handles

You will use the nuts, bolts, and screw eyes for this step. Also, thank you Lansdowne Life for the tutorial for this!

How to make versatile outdoor entertaining trays | www.rappsodyinrooms.comHow to make versatile outdoor entertaining trays | www.rappsodyinrooms.com

  1. To get your handles centered on the side of your tray, find the halfway point and then subtract two inches (if using four inch bolts). Put your first screw eye there.
  2. Then thread the bolt through and start two nuts on the bolt. Use the bolt to measure where the next screw eye should be. There should be space for the bolt to thread through the second screw eye and be secured with a nut.
  3. Screw in the next screw eye and finish with a nut.
  4. Repeat three more times to finish the handles for the tray.

That wraps up the second part of the series: Create! Tell me, what would you use these trays for?

Sharing This Post Here:

  • I love the patterns you created and the way you made the handles with nuts and bolts. These will be fun to use all summer.ReplyCancel

    • Thanks Paula! Those handles are one of my favorite things ever!ReplyCancel

  • Wow girl, they look fabulous! #colormeimpressed Totally pinned it!

I’d use the trays for cards on the deck or even bring them along with me in the car on long drives!! Maybe even a mini-laptop desk!ReplyCancel

    • Thank you so much Trisha! I love all your ideas for using them. The list can just go on and on, right? I’m definitely stealing the cards and car idea!ReplyCancel

This week’s posts are all about preparing for the kickoff to summer soirees! With spring weather finally here, I’m so excited to jump outdoors for just about anything – from exercising to reading to entertaining. Eric and my favorite way to entertain – by far – is a summer cookout. Heck, we like cookouts so much we sometimes do them in winter!

To help you prepare for your outdoor entertaining season, I’m here to offer you the three C’s: clean, create, and cook! With these three steps you will be on your way to throwing the ultimate summer soiree. Stress free no less!

Preparing for Summer Soirees: Start with Cleaning! | www.rappsodyinrooms.com

Today’s “C” is cleaning!

Yes, no one’s favorite thing to do is cleaning but with just a broom and your two hands you can whip your outdoor spaces into shape.

I started with the front porch. I once heard that your house is only as clean as your front porch. Cleaning it before a party can help eliminate so much cleaning afterward.

Preparing for Summer Soirees: Start with Cleaning! | www.rappsodyinrooms.com

I first started by cleaning out all the old planters so they were ready for fresh flowers (bonus if you can get them planted – I haven’t yet – although I have some perennials that came through this cold winter).

The I took out the door mats and shook them free of debris.

Finally is was sweeping time. There was so much pollen our whole front porch was yellow. Gross!

Even though I wasn’t able to get the flowers in (Sidebar: This is a good lesson to remember when planning parties – they don’t have to be perfect and your home doesn’t have to be a show room. It’s all about the feeling and welcoming your guests) I was able to put up my ferns!

Preparing for Summer Soirees: Start with Cleaning! | www.rappsodyinrooms.com

I love having fresh, leafy greens hanging on our front porch. They just bring so much beauty and green to the porch!

Preparing for Summer Soirees: Start with Cleaning! | www.rappsodyinrooms.com

Next I moved to the back porch – our real entertainment hub. I finished the sun room last summer so that was all ready to go. I focused on cleaning the open back porch.

First I cleared off everything in the porch. I was bad and didn’t cover our outdoor furniture. I actually took the old chair away (it was past its prime) and just wiped down the bench and shook out the cushion.

Preparing for Summer Soirees: Start with Cleaning! | www.rappsodyinrooms.com

I also wiped down the grill and brought up a planter that was growing green goodies.

Preparing for Summer Soirees: Start with Cleaning! | www.rappsodyinrooms.comPreparing for Summer Soirees: Start with Cleaning! | www.rappsodyinrooms.com

I also cleared out the old flowers here too so they were ready for fresh flowers as well.

Then it all came down to sweeping again.

Preparing for Summer Soirees: Start with Cleaning! | www.rappsodyinrooms.com

Once the porch floor was clean it was time to bring everything back to the porch.

It’s amazing what a broom and some oomph can do to your outdoor entertaining spaces. Decorating the porch is on the “to-do” list for this summer but even without all the pretty frou-frous this space is fresh and clean and ready for a summer soiree!

Now  you are one step closer to holding stress free summer soirees! Stay tuned for the next “C” of this series coming this week!

  • Doesn’t it feel great to get your outdoor areas clean and ready for guests? I hope you had fun with your friends!ReplyCancel

    • It definitely does Paula! Getting anything clean outside feels like such a bonus accomplishment!ReplyCancel

Happy (day after) Earth Day everyone! I never really noticed Earth Day all that much before but this year I sure did. It was fun to notice how so many other people recognize this day too. There were lots of green pictures popping up in all my feeds yesterday and many companies celebrating good ole Mother Earth. It felt fun to celebrate this home Earth that we can so easily take for granted.

To gear up for Earth Day I collaborated with Hometalk to talk about upcycled projects. It was all about taking items destined for the land fill or recycling bin and reusing them in beautiful and functional ways.

I had the opportunity to share these projects on the Fox 21/27 Morning news (thanks Bob!) and WSLS 10 Daytime Blue Ridge (thanks Natalie and Heather!). I always have so much fun with these three hosts!
