Have you ever used Annie Sloan chalk paint before? I hadn’t but I’d heard quite a bit about it. Honestly, I was a little scared of it. Although it boasts to be the easiest paint ever, I was skeptical. It seemed like this special paint that must have a special technique. Well I am here to bust that myth for you. It really is  a simple paint. It’s best for painting items (think furniture, cabinets) and it has no prep work. Yes, did you hear me? No prep work! Best. words. ever. Sold.

how-to-paint-laminate-with-chalk-paint

I had the perfect opportunity to use chalk paint because I got a little too excited about a new to me shelving unit for the Mego Cave.

Here is what the Mego Cave was looking like. Beautiful, but that corner in the back left needed something – shelving something. It was actually on my 2013 goal list all last year.

mego-cave-art-shelves

mego-cave-memory-board

I had an idea of wanting two L-shaped shelves in the corner. I even bought brackets – just never the wood. Then, my wonderful friend was getting rid of a shelving unit I had secretly been admiring in her house for ever. She took it down recently and mentioned she was going to get rid of it. So home it came with me! Thank you friend; you’re the best and you know who you are.

I was so giddy to get the shelving up that I didn’t think about the color – which ended up being not good (at least in my room).

annie-sloan-shelf-painting-02annie-sloan-shelf-painting-02

Not good at all you light wood laminate. But let me tell you, that sucker was a bear to hang. It felt like it was going to fall to pieces while holding it – plus it would be impossible to line up the screw holes again. So painting it on the wall it was.

Enter Annie Sloan chalk paint in Pure White (I picked it up downtown when shopping with Paula).

annie-sloan-shelf-painting-02

I wanted the easiest option possible because I was already annoyed I hadn’t thought about painting it before it was screwed to the wall. That would have been too easy.

Except hold-up – this was easy too. All I did to prep was slap down a few pieces of painters tape.

annie-sloan-shelf-painting-02

I was told that this paint goes a long way and doesn’t need many coats – except in white since there is no color pigment. Boy was that right. Coat one (put on with just a regular brush) was very streaky.

annie-sloan-shelf-painting-02

Coat two was even a little streaky so I did 3 coats. I wasn’t expecting that. Even still, it was so easy to do. Each coat took about 30 minutes (less than I was anticipating) so I didn’t really mind one bit.

To finish painting with chalk paint, most of the time you put a wax over it. Except I didn’t want to pay for the wax. So I didn’t. The paint still cures fine – it is all a matter of opinion with the finish. Not waxing gives it a chalky feel (gasp!). Normally, I wouldn’t like that, but on a shelf no one is going to touch, it wasn’t a problem with me. Also, the matte finish went perfectly with the matte wall. I liked that it didn’t have competing finishes.

annie-sloan-shelf-painting-02annie-sloan-shelf-painting-02

annie-sloan-shelf-painting-02

Overall, I am very pleased with the chalk paint. It is very expensive to buy a quart ($40) but it does last a long time so I will get many more projects out of it.

So don’t be scared by this paint that seems different and special – it’s easy!

Oh yes, those shelves won’t be blank forever! I wanted to give you the scoop on painting with the chalk paint. Up next will be the skinny on styling them. Hurray!

I was not endorsed by Annie Sloan chalk paint in any way. I just wanted to give it a try!

Isn’t fun when you find new friends in unexpected places? Like the world of blogging, for instance. When I started this little creative outlet, I didn’t really think that it would extend so thoroughly into all parts of my life, including my circle of friends. Blogging has actually increased by circle of friends, and awesome-ly enough introduced me to some in my own hometown. I first connected with Paula, blogger at Virginia Sweet Pea, when we both found out we were going to Haven from Lynchburg. We met up for the first time at Haven and then have periodically gotten together since we’ve gotten back. It’s so fun to have a local gab pal who gets this blogging…and someone who loves thrift stores as much as I do.

Paula sent me an email a week or so ago with a great idea. What if we went thrifting together and each did a post of the things we saw. Having different aesthetics and being in different age ranges made it seem like a really fun idea to share with you – and was a great excuse to just get together!

Without further ado, let’s get to the goods! Our first stop was Estates Revisited.

First up, this lovely credenza/buffet. I love the lines – especially the hardware. Look closely at those geometric handles! We are looking for something new for the entryway but this was just shy of too low.  Bummer!

thrift-store-adventures-credenza

This little beauty caught my eye too. It’s Asian in feel but has a neat mix of glittery element and metal. The trunk of the tree is copper metal twisted around. Love that detail!

thrift-store-adventures-tree

Apparently I’m into big wooden pieces of furniture that offer ginormous storage opportunities. This was also a fleeting thought for the entry way but it again was too low and too long. It was a little beat up around the edges but would be a great storage piece for a craft studio or office,

thrift-store-adventures-storage

I fell hardcore in love with these next two pieces. I believe my quote was, “I would buy these immediately if I had any space in our house.” Then Paula, smart woman she is, asked, “Have you sat in them? Are they comfortable?” Ha! I hadn’t. So we sat down and both agreed they weren’t movie watching kind of sofas. Bummer, but easier to pass by. However, if these had been teal I would have thrown comfort and the confines of our house to the wind and bought those babies!

thrift-store-adventures-sofas

Ok, this one is definitely going to be polarizing but I’m a fan. It’s green so that definitely is on the right track for me anyways. It is also a little Asian but I just love the bright, happy colors of the sofa. Don’t you think that would make a bold, colorful statement in a room?

thrift-store-adventures-sofa

Now begins the story of my obsession with dining sets that day. Not sure why, but I just kept seeing some goodness. My #1 favorite is this modern beauty. I could just eat her up – or at least eat on her. Those chair lines are making me pine right here at my computer (haha how much better would that line be if the chairs and/or table were made from pine)?!

thrift-store-adventures-modern

I liked the simple, block lines on this table set. I don’t know if I would buy the table with it but I liked the chairs. Paired with a funky colored table could be fun!

thrift-store-adventures-chairs

This is my “has potential” dining room set. I just love these rattan type rounded chairs. I’m not a fan of light wood so I envision painting these a crisp white and pairing with a rustic, deep wood colored table or a bright colored table. Those cushions definitely need a colorful fabric facelift!

thrift-store-adventures-rattan

Maps, oh maps, I love you. This was an old school calendar that they have in classrooms that you can pull down. It’s gorgeous isn’t it? You need a whole wall for this but it would be worth it. It is definitely a vision I have to a child’s room one day down the line.

thrift-store-adventures-map

I am also a sucker for book ends. These dice were a fun little find – brassy too which is always good.

thrift-store-adventures-dice-book-ends

So keeping in line with my large furniture loving, this china cabinet spoke to me as well. As you know, I’ve struggled with my china cabinet in the past (although I have a fun idea to update it soon) so it still surprises me when I am drawn to them. I like them in concept but they need to have the right lines. These are the right lines to me.

thrift-store-adventures-china-cabinet

I should have inserted myself into this picture to give you some scale. This painting is HUGE. Like 5ish feet tall. There were three of them and Paula and I had fun speculating where they were from. They are all local scenes so we are thinking they used to hang in the Town Hall building or the like.

thrift-store-adventures-huge-paintings

This bottle cap rope impersonator was actually made by Paula’s friend. How neat is that? I love the blue and gold one on the left. Another fun idea for a kids room!

thrift-store-adventures-bottle-caps

Our next store was Estates & Consignments where I didn’t have as much luck except when I fell in deep love with this hot air balloon light. Oh. my. If it didn’t have a pretty pricey tag on it I would have bought it. Amazing!

thrift-store-adventures-ballon

Now, just for fun we visiting a store that has a great collection of vintage and handmade items called Pastiche on Main (Paula did a whole post about the store here). These are all the finished projects picked from thrift stores (or new products) so there was a lot of inspiration here. I love how they took the natural elements of branches and wrapped them in colorful yarn!

thrift-store-adventures-yarn

This is an idea that I might be implementing in my house with a crate I have lying around. Chalkboard paint, you’ve done it again!

thrift-store-adventures-chalkboardAfter this store we stuffed our faces with the most delightful food I have perhaps ever had at a Mediterranean place called Al Rayan. Get the vegetable curry wrap – and I don’t even like curry. Oh. my. gosh.

Anyways, a better action item them taking a trip to Lynchburg to eat would be to take a virtual trip through Lynchburg via Paula’s blog to check out what caught her eye that day!

  • It looks like you guys had so much fun 🙂 I’m dying over that dresser! That is gorgeous…and so much space! We’ll have to all go next time we come into town!ReplyCancel

  • I had so much fun with you on Saturday!

I don’t think I noticed the green sofa. (How could I have missed it??) I’m still crushing on the Danish dining chairs that you featured.

We are lucky that we have many more places to hit in town if we decide to do a post like this again.ReplyCancel

    • I had a blast with you too Paula!

Isn’t that green couch awesome? I’m glad you like it too. I seriously have been considering going back and buying those Danish chairs.

Can’t wait to do it again!ReplyCancel

  • Akilah

I wonder if you could have raised that credenza in the first picture, since it was on wheel casters? Attach larger wheels for more height or unscrew the old ones and screw a block of wood to get it to the height you needed. Hmmm. I’m no expert, though. Looks like you have some great stores there.

Oh, I probably would have bought those paintings. I love large scale art. Do you remember how much they were asking for them?ReplyCancel

    • I love the idea of raising the credenza. Such a good one and would probably work! And weren’t those big pictures awesome? I have no idea as to how much they cost though.I want to say $160 but I’m not really sure. We do have great stores around here!ReplyCancel

Now, let’s really get this 2014 party started off right! I like to compile a yearly list of goals for the blog, our home, and myself. It’s not something that I am very strict with (as you can see in the 2013 goal recap) but it helps keep me motivated. Heck, it’s a list and I am a list girl – the kind who writes things down that I’ve already done just to get the satisfaction of crossing them off. So here’s to many crossed off items in 2014!

Blog Goals:

  • Explore and enhance my skills in Photoshop Elements by forcing myself to organize and edit all my photos in it for every post. No shortcuts or dipping back into the old way.
  • Master my new 50mm lens.
  • Make my site deeper and easier to find content by enhancing the menu and sidebars.
  • Submit a project at least once a month for features elsewhere.
  • Apply to 2-3 more ad/sponsorship networks.
  • Attend 2nd Haven Conference. (YAY!)
  • Bonus goal: Be a guest contributor….ahhh this is definitely happening. Details coming soon!

Home Goals:

outside-back-patio

Outside:

  • Kill all crabgrass and reseed back yard (it’s a mess – mainly because of our tree removal).
  • Powerwash backyard concrete patio and clean awning (or take it down?).
  • Create a beautiful entertaining space on back deck.

Inside:

new-living-room-arrangment

  • Change out curtains, pillows, and rug in living room.
  • Add more pops of color to kitchen.
  • Replace all blinds in the house.
  • Add and style shelves in Mego Cave.
  • Make gallery wall in hallway.

www.rappsodyinrooms.com

  • Make new curtains in guest bedroom and recover headboard. Add artwork.
  • Paint jewelry holder in master bedroom.
  • Repaint master bathroom and add artwork.
  • Organize unfinished basement.

Personal Goals:

haven-conference-2013

  • Keep doing my best.
  • Don’t compare myself to others.
  • Love yourself.

There it is – my guiding principles and list of the year! Those aren’t all the house things I have in mind but the major, unfinished stuff that needs to get done. Really, if all I do is organize that basement, I’d call it a win for 2014!

Interested in how I did in 2013? Check out my 2013 goals and then see if I accomplished them.

What are your goals/resolutions/lists/guiding principles of 2014?

Sharing this post:

  • I love making lists, too — and also add things to them after the fact just for the satisfaction of crossing them off! If it’s not written down, it won’t get done… pretty much without fail. I think your goals for 2014 are excellent, and I’m sure you’ll succeed!ReplyCancel

    • Yay fellow list maker Meg! There is something addicting about them! Thanks for the 2014 goal support!ReplyCancel

  • Your blog goals are definitely obtainable. I am so excited for Haven! The back patio at your house would perfectly hold a patio set. I would suggest cutting down the larger shrubs that you have to make the space look more open. You would lose privacy but I think it would look nice without the larger shrubs. For your lawn, make sure you have crabgrass and not wiregrass. If it is wiregrass, the only way to kill it is with Roundup. (I speak from experience.) 🙂ReplyCancel

    • Thanks so much Paula for all the great advice! That’s a great idea about cutting down those larger shrubs. You are so right on that. Good idea on the grass too. I have no idea what kind of grass is, but I take you as the lawn and landscaping master with all the work you’ve done this year!ReplyCancel

  • GREAT list and I hope you accomplish them all! Haven’t made a list, but I need to…
    Blessings,
    CindyReplyCancel

  • Great list, Megan! I need to figure out Photoshop Elements. My in-laws actually it to me because it came with the computer they just bought and I installed it about a month ago, took one look at it, and went back to using Picmonkey. I know it would probably make my life so much easier once I figure it out, but getting the motivation to do that is the problem. I’m adding this to my 2014 goal list 🙂ReplyCancel

    • Thanks Jena! Yeah, it definitely is a little intimidating. I just need someone to sit down and walk me through it and share their tricks. Wouldn’t that be nice? But I must suck it up and learn it!ReplyCancel

  • Megan-you and I will learn Photoshop together this year!!!!ReplyCancel

    • Sounds great Beth! Any ideas on where to start or good resources?ReplyCancel

  • Great Goals! Can’t wait to see it all happen ~SonyaReplyCancel

  • Wow Megan, I could have written those blogging goals myself! I can’t wait for Haven again and seeing all of you. Happy Week.ReplyCancel

    • How funny Kathy! We will have to check in with each other throughout the year!ReplyCancel

  • What a wonderful way to stay on top of it all Megan! I love your goals, personal, household, blogging…all of them. Really would love to get to Haven again this year but but it’s right in the middle of our family’s annual HHi getaway. boo!
    I’ll miss seeing blogging buddies.ReplyCancel

    • Oh bummer Therese! We will definitely miss you at Haven! We go to Hilton Head too…usually the week of July 4th. How fun!ReplyCancel

  • I’m a list girl too! Only problem is I have too many of them at one time! They are everywhere. 😉 I need to get more organized with mine. 🙂
    NancyReplyCancel

    • List girls unite! I love the image of you with so many lists…there must be an app for that problem, right?!ReplyCancel

I know everyone is really full swing into 2014 but I just have a little bit of 2013 I need to wrap-up. Earlier this week I looked at my top DIY projects of 2013, but now it’s time to look at how my 2013 goals panned out. Let’s dive in and see what I did – and didn’t do.

2013-goals-delivered

2013 Blog Goals

  • Overhaul the blog design – ACCOMPLISHED twice! Here’s the first and second. I think I’ve really hit my stride in the design now. I love it – and love that it is on WordPress.org.
  • Keep adding content and organizing into pages and categories to keep the site user-friendly – ACCOMPLISHED. I did quite a bit of this before I transferred to .org – where I started over again. I’m still working on it more!
  • Work on photography skills and be patient when taking pictures (I tend to rush…). ACCOMPLISHED I think? Definitely still working on this. I even got a new lens at Christmas to help out!
  • Bonus Goals: Submit some original content/room makeovers to other blogs. (Any suggestions?) And another possible goal is to jump into the world of graphic design a little bit more although a splurge for Photoshop seems a little much for me right now. ACCOMPLISHEDI did a couple of these. If you follow me on Facebook that is usually where I share those. Still need to do more though!

Home Goals

Outside

  • Paint front door red ACCOMPLISHED. Yay! Yay! Yay! Three years of wanting this door a different color and it happens!
  • Paint shutters black – ACCOMPLISHED Prep and Painting / The Reveal Another huge YAY from me. A very long project but worth the result!
  • Bonus Project: Anything in the back entertaining area. Perhaps sprucing up the screened in porch, or making the outside porch an oasis, or perhaps staining/stamping/painting the concrete area. ACCOMPLISHED. Ha. Haha. Can I say sun room? A HUGE makeover there. Here is the final reveal with all the projects listed. Still lots more outdoor projects to tackle though!

Inside

new-living-room-arrangment

  • Paint hallways and tan walls in living room. – ACCOMPLISHEDThey look so fresh and clean. It’s great. Yet I’m already feeling the urge to repaint them…
  • Paint all trim in house that hasn’t been painted yet. This includes the hallway and living room trim (including fireplace), small guest bedroom trim, and a few doors in the basement. SORT OF ACCOMPLISHED. I painted the hallway, living room, and fireplace trim (in the painting post above). The small guest bedroom and basement still just have their old paint job on them.
  • Spruce up living room to make it a little more modern and a little less traditional while still keeping it cozy. Perhaps by changing the textiles and the layout. SORT OF ACCOMPLISHED. We have a new layout and new chairs. Still more to come in this room!
  • Start decorating the small guest room. I’m thinking paint, side tables, lighting (lamps/side tables and a cool chandelier), and some artwork. NOPEActually, this room has the term “bedrage” (said like garage) cause it is now a place for lots of car stuff that Eric uses all the time. One day we will have an actual garage…

www.rappsodyinrooms.com

  • Keep on in the basement – perhaps building up Eric’s little office/project nook. NOPE – Nothing really happened in the basement this year except adding a lamp.

www.rappsodyinrooms.com

  • Organize unfinished basement. NOPE. That is on top of my list!
  • Finish Mego Cave. Buy a rug, make an ottoman, perhaps put some shelving units in. Details! MOSTLY ACCOMPLISHED. Bought rug 1 and rug 2, bought an ottoman that I never posted about but is hanging around in there (I need to clean it), and spoiler alert – shelves were hung yesterday. More to come here!

Personal Goals

For all these personal goals, let’s just say I’m still working on them quite hard! But there were wonderful times of bliss, relaxation, snuggling, challenges, growth, inspiration, questioning, bawling, wondering, pandering, saving, and loving.

eric-megan-rapp-las-vegas

  • Stay in the moment.
  • Work on paying off car and student loans.
  • Be less critical and achieve perfection less. It’s okay to just relax a little.
  • Buy less new things. Make more things with my own two hands. Perhaps think less about “things”.
  • Snuggle with my husband as much as possible.

You can check out the original 2013 goals post here. Stay tuned for where 2014 will be taking me!

  • You were a busy girl and accomplished quite a bit this year. My favorite personal goal is your “Snuggle with Husband” one. That’s so sweet!ReplyCancel

  • All things considered, I think you did a great job meeting your goals! I’m inspired to create a list of my own now. 🙂ReplyCancel

Happy after Christmas and almost New Year! I hope you all had a blessed holiday full of love and good cheer. Our family sure did! Lots of laughs and relaxation – just what this girl needed. Now I am oh-so ready for 2014; I’ve definitely got that New Year surge running through my veins. Before we head into new and exciting territory, I want to look back at what a spectacular year 2013 was and what some of my favorite projects were. So let’s rewind the clock of 2013.

Painting an Indoor/Outdoor Rug

This is my all-time favorite post of 2013. It was a labor of love but had amazing results (in my mind).

This was a small project where I covered our new shredder’s box with fabric and called her Shredalina. Apparently we all got a little love in our heart for Shredalina based on the response of this post. Plus, it’s a great way to dress up mundane objects around the house!
