Has something ever happened in your life that makes you question your purpose in life? Makes you wonder if you are fulfilling the life you were meant to live? Perhaps something that made your mind expand a million times over and make you think about the choices in your life. Make you wonder if you can do more, give more. Make you wonder if your life can be bigger. This has happened to me a few times in my life. I think it is a natural part of growing up; questioning, wondering, and dreaming. To me, it has always been natural in my life. I have always dreamed big dreams of doing something big with my life, in giving back to the world and of being a world citizen.

Out of college all I wanted to do was work at a non-profit, with the hopes of it being an international one. Well, I did end up working at a non-profit but a local one (still a great place and cause). My dreams didn’t play out there as I thought they would. They actually made my dreams of working at a non-profit get a little bit wobbly. Then I strayed away from that, although sometimes working at a quasi-government entity feels a lot like a non-profit, especially when we are an essential service organization (water provider). The fulfillment, joy, purpose, and community I have found in that job has been unbelievable. Yet, at times, it has been hard on me to live in a small town in rural Virginia and work in an even smaller town. They may be foolish dreams but I always dreamed of taking on the world.

Yet, one thing I have learned in my first few years out of college, living the “normal” and “expected” life, is that life really is what you make it. You can live big dreams in a small town and change the world from right where you are, wherever that is.

Recently, I read a book that has both confirmed my ideas that I can make a difference no matter where I am but at the same time spurred on my deep down desires to do something radical in life and to really make a difference. The book is called Kisses for Katie, and it is on my must read list for everyone.

www.rappsodyinrooms.comImage from Amazon

The book is about a girl (right out of high school) who has a yearning to go to Africa, which she does for a few weeks. Those few weeks give her a need to go back and do more. So she goes back for a year. Then tries to do what is expected of her and come back to her home in Tennessee and go to college. After a semester of that, she realizes her home is in Africa, with the FOURTEEN daughters she has adopted. Woah. Amazing. She starts a non-profit to help her small town and transforms the lives of so many people, most of them children. It truly is inspiring.

www.rappsodyinrooms.com

This book is a very spiritual book, but I believe any person, whatever religion they are or beliefs they have, would be truly inspired by the book. Katie basically gives up her life for God to guide it and the remarkable events and activities of her life truly show it. She is a person of complete unselfishness and love, yet so real and humble. Reading about her actions through her eyes shows that she is only doing what she feels led to do in her heart. It is awe-inspiring.

www.rappsodyinrooms.com

I thought I would share a few of my favorite passages that I highlighted while reading to truly help get the essence of her thoughts and activities over to you.

“…I quit my life. Originally quitting my life was to be temporary, lasting just one year before I went to college and returned to normal, American teenager life. But after that year, which I spent in Uganda, returning to “normal” wasn’t possible. I had seen what life was about and I could not pretend I didn’t know. So I quit my life again, and for good this time. I quit college; I quit cute designer clothes and my little yellow convertible; I quit my boyfriend. I no longer have all the things the world says are important. I do not have a retirement fund; I do not even have electricity some days. But I have everything I know is important. I have a joy and a peace that are unimaginable and can come only from a place better than this earth. I cannot fathom being happier.” (Kisses From Katie, page xviii).

www.rappsodyinrooms.com

“I certainly don’t believe everyone should sell all of their belongings and pack a suitcase and move to Africa. I don’t think people all over the planet should drop everything to go somewhere far from everything familiar and be missionaries. In fact, I believe anyone can be a missionary right where they are. Every day, we have a choice. We can stay nestled in our safe comfortable places…or we can take a risk, do something to help someone else, make a person smile, change someone’s world. Life to the fullest exists. It’s available. All we have to do is decide to get up and embrace it.” (Kisses From Katie, page 101)

www.rappsodyinrooms.com

“I don’t always know where this life is going. I can’t see the end of the road, but here is the great part: courage is not about knowing the path. It is about taking the first step.” (Kisses From Katie, page 247)

www.rappsodyinrooms.com

It makes you really think about your life and wonder if you are doing all the good you can for the world, wherever and whatever that may be for you. It also makes me think big again; something that I sometimes lose when I get so dredged down in my 9 to 5 life full of bills and these privileged first world responsibilities, as they seem in comparison to Katie’s in Africa. I am pledging to give over my life and try to become as unselfish and obedient as possible. To let God lead my life and dreams and actions to wherever they may go. Perhaps this blog is a way that I can reach people in the world and help, however that may unfold. This book is such a good reminder about what really is important in life. It’s a book that I want to pick up and read daily to just remind myself how privileged and blessed I am in this world and to always, always remember to give more.

What about you? How are you feeling? Have you dealt with big dreams in a small town? How have you helped make the world a better place in your own way?

Hi Megan – I just finished the book. It is a life changer! Katie is an amazing young woman and God is good!!! From this book I have learned that I need to listen for the voice of God so that I can find out his plan for me (I know that it is not working in a basement office for a family law lawyer!). – SaraReplyCancel

    • Hi Sara! Thanks so much for stopping by and commenting. There really just is something about this book that makes you want to rise up and change the world just a little bit. I’m feeling silly. Don’t ask about the title. I’m not exactly sure what I was going for there. Yet, somehow that ties into this post, because it is about our guest bedroom. Sometimes I don’t know what I was going for in there either. Here is a shot of how it has been looking for quite some time.

www.rappsodyinrooms.com

I painted the side tables and TV stand, but other than that this room has had this look for quite some time. Yet, I didn’t do a happy dance and lovingly stare at the room whenever I passed by it. I liked it and was pleased with how it looked, but I wasn’t head over heels in love. And I believe in true love. I also believe that you should love absolutely everything about every little item that comes into your house. If not, it’s just clutter. I had been trying to work this brown and purple room. The hubs had bought that comforter set on his own (pre-marriage) so it held some sentimental value. Or so I thought. When I asked him about possibly changing it up, he said “No big deal Megaloo”. Then I set about trying to find a bright, cheerful duvet comforter (so the brown could live inside its new home) that we both loved. It’s important that this is a home that we build together, not a Megan dominated space. That’s what the Mego Cave is for. After some searching, Macy’s won again (that’s where the master bedroom duvet cover was from as well).

www.rappsodyinrooms.com

Now don’t scream and shout (Britney Spears reference – gah!) when you see this. I warn you because I did. You see, the duvet comforter most definitely does not (nor was I expecting it to) go with the curtains and headboard fabric. In fact, it is quite horrendous to look at all together.

www.rappsodyinrooms.com

But in full disclosure mode and showing you real time updates, you get to see what I see every day baby. I see a beautiful duvet cover that insanely clashes with every other textile in the room.

www.rappsodyinrooms.com

On the sunny side, all the furniture (wood and painted) works splendidly with the comforter, as does the paint color. (Please forgive the wrinkles.)

www.rappsodyinrooms.com

Let’s call that seeing the glass half full. But I do apologize to any guests who come before I find the right fabric for curtains and recovering the headboard.

www.rappsodyinrooms.com

Right now I am scouring local and online fabric stores trying to find the right fit! Stay tuned for updates!

Let me first begin that my heart and prayers are going towards Boston and that this post is in honor of them. I felt like I was able to honor Boston a little this past weekend as I entered my first race since I was in track and cross country in the 9th grade. I did Lynchburg’s first 5K Color Run! Now what is a color run? Basically it is a race where they throw powdered colors on you throughout. And let me say, it makes it really fun. Like really fun. The other part that makes it fun was the fun ladies that I ran it with – Jamie and Cindy. Here we are at white and clean before the run.

www.rappsodyinrooms.com

In our race packets they included fun tie die bracelets for the Children’s Miracle Network and fun glasses to wear to protect your eyes. We added the bandanas to be gangster to protect us from inhaling the powder.

The run was in support of the Children’s Miracle Network, so it felt good to know that the registration was going towards a good cause. The basic rundown of the race is that you all start out together with in initial blast of color thrown at you. Then, as you go further down the course you run through different color stations where basically people just shake and throw colored powder (it smells like baby powder).

www.rappsodyinrooms.comSource: News and Advance

I don’t know those people, I just grabbed a photo from the paper since I was all busy getting showered with powder during this part. For some reason getting showered with color is really quite a blast. Then you get to take glamor body tie-died shots at the end.

www.rappsodyinrooms.com

www.rappsodyinrooms.comAww, isn’t Cindy’s son adorable?! He ran part of the race with her. So cute!

www.rappsodyinrooms.com

At the end of the race there is a color pit, where basically everyone gets together and jumps around throwing color in the air.

www.rappsodyinrooms.com

Source: News and Advance

We actually didn’t stay for this part because Jamie’s sister went to the hospital to have a baby when we started the race, so needless to stay we didn’t dilly dally at the end. But we still had a blast!

Also, I wanted to get a fun shot of my face. When I got home I was able to actually see all the color that was splashed on me. I really liked the pretty colors on my face. Perhaps we can make it a new trend?

www.rappsodyinrooms.com

Here’s a shot down…

www.rappsodyinrooms.com

And for a grand finale, who doesn’t love a race that gives you Reese’s eggs at the end?!

www.rappsodyinrooms.com

Now I am also thinking about doing more races, especially the 5K since it is a nice short little run! Maybe this will actually get me in gear, and I will actually run the Virginia 10 Miler this year. I keep saying I want to and I never do. I’ll let you know if there are any more runs on the horizon!

  • Awe I didn’t even know that Lynchburg did a run like this one! I will have to keep an eye out for upcoming runs there. My husband works in Lynchburg so it’s right around the corner for us. It looks like so much fun!!ReplyCancel

    • It was the first one but they said they want to do one or two next year! Next time I will post about it on Rappsody in Rooms Facebook page to help spread the word about it locally. It was so fun!ReplyCancel

  • I had no idea that Lynchburg had a color run last weekend. It looks like a blast!!ReplyCancel

    • It was a ton of fun! It was the first one Lynchburg has hosted but the creators said they wanted to do 1 or 2 next year! I’ll make sure to post it on the Rappsody in Rooms Facebook page.ReplyCancel

You might have guessed in this artwork post that I had something up my sleeve, er rather up my wall. I was up to mischief in my favorite room of the house, my Mego Cave. This room has come a long way in just under a year, and I think this project is one of its crowning projects. You might remember the wall above the love seat when I did one of my first projects for the room making some fabric artwork.

www.rappsodyinrooms.com

With the new wall color, this fabric wasn’t working. The two greens just weren’t jiving right for me. I had been on the hunt for a new piece of fabric that would liven up the room more, perhaps bringing in some of the colors in the memory board. Then, my mom and I visited Ikea and plans changed, like they tend to do in that store with so many opportunities for creativity inside! Instead, we found picture shelves and a slew of artwork and frames to put on them!

www.rappsodyinrooms.com

You saw how I put the artwork together the other week. This is what the artwork looks like up on its shelves!

www.rappsodyinrooms.com

www.rappsodyinrooms.com

The basic shape of these shelves are a lop-sided “u”. There is a back to screw in the wall, a bottom to place items on, and a small lip in the front to hold the pictures from sliding off. You could easily make something like this, but for the bargain price of $15 dollars each, you couldn’t buy the wood and paint for these for less!

Doesn’t it just add so much to the room? It brings a lot of color and dimension and flexibility! I can switch up the pictures whenever I want to make it have a little different feel. I’m in love!

Four layers of chocolate cake with a homemade buttercream frosting between them and a chocolate ganache and toasted almonds to top it off.

www.rappsodyinrooms.com

It really doesn’t get better than that. Oh the happiness of eating that cake was pretty tremendous. Thankfully, it wasn’t a cake that was going to be sitting around our house, because I would probably be writing this with an extra 20 pounds attached to me. This one put on its business suit and traveled down the road with me to work. We definitely like to eat for any occasion celebrate birthdays at work, so we knew we had to do it up big when my boss’s birthday came up. You know, go big or get fired go home? Kidding! My co-workers and I used the excuse to peruse our dessert Pinterest boards and came up with what the pinner called a Ho Ho Cake. I gladly accepted/volunteered for the task of making the cake.

www.rappsodyinrooms.com

Warning: this cake will take some time. I decided to split up the cake making process over a few days so it would be enjoyable and not the cake that never ended that I was so tired of making that I wanted to smash it in someone’s face instead of eat it.

www.rappsodyinrooms.com

First I made the cakes. The original recipe called for making three layers of homemade devil’s food cake. I decided to make four layers from two box mixes. Call me a cheater. I call myself a time saver. Tasted great to me!

www.rappsodyinrooms.com

Then I made the buttercream frosting. This was my first time making frosting and I was a little bit nervous but it was a piece of cake (err…that’s a confusing statement). All you need is lots (AND LOTS) of butter and sugar. Sometimes it really best not knowing what is in something.

Then you make the chocolate ganache and toast the almonds. I never knew what was in chocolate ganache until now. Once again I will say it’s better not knowing sometimes!

www.rappsodyinrooms.com

Then it all comes together into a wonderfully tall and delicious and beautiful cake! I was quite proud of this one. Oh, and it tasted so. darn. deliciously. good. Best.cake.ever. I’m. still. craving. it. Okay. I’ll. stop.

Thankfully, everyone agreed with me and the cake and birthday celebration were a success! I would definitely think about making this one again for a special occasion!

Cake Ingredients:

  • 2 devils food cake mixes (and the oil and eggs to make them)

Buttercream Ingredients:

  • 5 cups confectioner’s sugar
  • scant 1/2 cup hot/boiling water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 1/2 cups (5 sticks) unsalted butter, softened

Chocolate Ganache/Topping Ingredients:

  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup whipping cream
  • Sliced Almonds

Directions:

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.  Butter three 9.5 inch cake pans.  Dust with granulated sugar.

2. Make the cake batter: Make the batter according to package directions.  Divide the batter between the prepared pans and smooth the tops.

3. Bake the cakes: Bake the cakes until according to package directions.  Cool in the pans on cooling racks for 15 minutes, then invert the cakes onto the cooling racks and cool completely. I only had two pans so I made one box, let those cool, and then made the other box and baked.

4. Make the buttercream: Put the confectioner’s sugar in a large mixing bowl.  With the electric mixer running on its slowest speed, slowly add in the hot/boiling water.  Then add the vanilla and salt and mix well.  Add the butter and continue mixing on slow for about 20 seconds.  Increase the speed to medium-slow and mix for another 20 seconds.  Then turn the mixer to medium-high and let the buttercream mix for 15 minutes.

5. Begin assembling the cake: Place one cake layer on a platter, bottom side up.  Spoon a quarter of the buttercream over the cake, spread evenly to the edges.  Top with a second cake layer, bottom side up.  Spoon the same amount of buttercream over the cake layer, spreading it evenly to the edges.  Do this with the third layer as well. Top with the fourth cake layer, bottom side down. Then use the last of the buttercream to smooth it around the sides.  Chill the cake for about 30 minutes before adding the chocolate ganache.

6. Make the toasted almonds: In a medium pan, dry toast the sliced almonds over medium-high heat until slightly golden.  Transfer to a cool plate to prevent the nuts from continuing to cook.

7. Make the chocolate ganache: Place the chocolate in a medium-size bowl.  In a small saucepan over medium high heat, bring the cream to a strong simmer.  Remove the cream from the heat and pour it over the chocolate chips, and let it stand for a couple of minutes.  Then slowly stir, or whisk, the chocolate and cream together until it is smooth and glossy.  Let the ganache rest for 10 minutes before using it to glaze the top of the cake.  Sprinkle the toasted almonds on top of the cake.  Let the cake chill briefly before serving.

8. Finish assembling the cake: Spoon half of the ganache on the middle of the top layer of cake.  With the back of a spoon, slowly spread the ganache over the top of the cake.  Spoon the rest of the ganache onto the middle of the top layer of cake.  Use the spoon to gently spread the ganache so that it begins to spread over the sides of the cake and down the sides.  Sprinkle with the toasted almonds.

Then eat and enjoy! It definitely is a great cake for a party or another fun occasion!

www.rappsodyinrooms.com

Side note: The picture of the ¾ devoured cake were taken at work, since I didn’t think it would be cool to take a slice out to photograph it before it made it to work. Everyone got a kick out of the fact that I brought the camera to take pictures of just the cake, not the birthday celebration itself. Sorry boss! Your birthday really was all about the blog. Cause that’s how I roll and he knows it. I mean, I literally ran out of the room the moment he walked into it for his birthday celebration. It was just because I forgot the card. After one bite of cake, I’m pretty sure he forgave me.
