I’m coming up on my one year anniversary with my apartment! As of November 7, 2015, I would have made my nest in this sweet little apartment for one year.

Look how far we have come together. 🙂

This anniversary also got my thinking about how challenging I found it to find an apartment.

A little back story: I live in what is increasingly becoming a college town (we have 3). There are quite a lot of apartment buildings but many of them attract lots and lots of college students. That put me in competition with them mid-semester so there wasn’t a lot of turnover.

My-6-Tips-on-Finding-an-Apartment

Here’s what I learned in my first time apartment hunt:

1. Set your budget.

Step One in finding an apartment - set a budget  This is the most important factor in deciding which apartments to even look at. Make a nice Excel sheet with all of your budget items and find that comfortable range of how much you can spend on rent. Do NOT overspend here; it’s not worth it. Really be honest and budget for a place that you can live comfortably in while also paying your bills and having money to save and have fun with.

2. Decide your general location.

step two in finding an apartment: pinpoint your location  How long do you want your commute to be? Do you want to be able to walk to places? Are you looking for something more country or more city? What side of town do you want to be in? Where do you feel safe? Those were the general questions I asked myself when determining the general area I wanted to live.

3. Talk with friends.

step three in finding an apartment - talk with friends  This is probably the best way to become aware of places to live – and be guided if they were good places or bad places. Plus, you can hear first hand stories about the rental company management. The rental company can make or break your feelings about where you live.

The place I live in now was highly recommended by friends – and I never even knew it was there! Without them, I wouldn’t have found my apartment.

I also learned of rental companies to NOT rent from and places that felt a little shady.

4. Craigslist and Apartment Finder

step four in finding an apartment - checking on craigslist and apartment finder
Yes, the power of your friends can greatly help in this process but they don’t know everything. I found a lot of great apartments via Craigslist – where both rental companies and individuals renting out their own places.

Apartment Finder was helpful, but not my favorite. It can definitely show you all the major apartment buildings around and you can sort by price and type of apartment.

5. Drive around

step five in finding an apartment - drive around

Oh wait…not what you thought I meant in driving around?! Yeah, you probably shouldn’t drive around like you’re a race car driver.

I found so many places by just driving around my designated area. I would literally see a place, pull in, Google it, and if I liked the pictures and prices, I would place a phone call right there and then to the rental agency. Might as well hop right on it!

6. Viewing Places

step six in apartment hunting - viewing a place

I wish I viewed this place! Gorgeous and at a beach. I thought we needed some pretty eye candy at this point.

Once you are beginning to look inside of the different apartments, my number one suggestion is to trust your gut. Your gut it what ultimately tells you if this is home or not. There were a couple of places I almost rented, but felt hesitant on. Then, I walked into my current apartment. No hesitation. A smile lit up my face. This was home. It felt right.

My number two suggestion when viewing places is to hang around in the parking lot and talk to people. Ok, ok, I know this sounds creepy but it is important to talk to the residents there. I would just say I was considering renting and ask how they liked living there, how the rental company was, was it quiet, and would even sometimes ask if the utility costs were reasonable (because sometimes places have bad insulation and all of a sudden your electric bill is crazy high and you’re stuck!).

I hope if you are looking for an apartment that you find these tips helpful! Are there any other you would add?

I used to be married, in a home, with babies on the brain.

Then I lost it all: the husband, the home, and the baby fever.

I was a single, divorced woman whose life had just been changed in almost every way.

I moved into my first apartment all on my own at age 27.

I went on my second date at age 28 (I had only dated one man in my entire life prior to this).

I started looking at all of my life decisions and reevaluating everything. I started learning more than I ever thought possible.

I started doing new things I never thought of before and attending fun, social events all alone.

Don

I started thinking about my career and where in the world I wanted to go with it (instead of feeling stuck).

I started taking this blog exactly where I wanted it to go.

I decorated my apartment just. the. way. I. wanted. to.

I found strength I never knew I had.

I found a depth of happiness I didn’t know existed.

I built a community all by myself.

I asked for help more than I ever have before (this is a good thing since I’m stubborn and need to learn to let others help me).

I opened my mind to the unlimited adventures that world was dangling in front of me. None of which I had ever dreamt of before.

Girl Looking Over River

While all of these things were happened: the change, the adventures, the pain, the crying montages, the joy, I would sometimes think: Whoa. All of this almost never happened to me. I was on a path where none of these things and these revelations would have ever occurred.

Thank God I didn’t miss this adventure and settle for the easier path. I couldn’t imagine having missed out on a single minute of this new adventure.

Ok future: bring it on. I totally got this. You’ve shown me I have more strength than I ever thought possible, so here it goes: you take it from here.

  • Totally appreciate how real this is! You never know what lies on the other side of pain. So glad you found what you didn’t even know you needed!ReplyCancel

    • Thank you so much, Michelle! You really never know what anyone is really going through, do you? There’s only so much people usually show you…which is the whole reason I’ve started writing more of these types of blogs. I want to show the real side of life: the good, bad and ugly!ReplyCancel

I love sending out holiday cards. In my opinion, there aren’t enough postage stamped personalized cards and letters being exchanged anymore. I personally take it upon myself to help the USPS stay busy by always writing cards and sending care packages whenever I can.

This is especially important to me in the holiday season. I love the idea of picking a beautiful, glittery, and joyful holiday card and sending it out with a special message.

Yet, this year, when I got to thinking about cards, I kind of got sad for a moment. I love getting photo cards that show my friends and family in adorable coordinating outfits in their homes, with their animals, on trips, etc.

I also love the idea of being part of that crowd. Yet, as I racked my brain I didn’t have any pictures that would make a good holiday card front. I didn’t go on a trip that would show everyone this cool place I went; I don’t have a dog or cat to cuddle with in the picture (nor do I have kids to do that with either); I don’t have a new home that I can show in the picture.

But, like I said, I only got sad for moment because I realized there are so many other fun ways to have holiday cards that are beautiful and unique.  Why was I stuck on picture cards? They are beautiful and personal, and I look forward to joining that crowd in the future, but not this year.

The point of Christmas cards is not to make me feel sad planning for them – nor being boastful showing my face with something super cool. The point of the cards is sharing a special message of love and happiness with those people you are closet with in life.

When you think about just spreading joy and love through your card, it is exciting to pick the card that best describes that for you that year.

I popped over to Minted (can you tell that I love them with this art work and curtains) to check out their personalized cards. Not only do they have oh-so fun pictures cards (next year, maybe with a picture of my new dog on it? You know, the one I haven’t gotten yet but want to?!) but they also have really neat cards that don’t have pictures.

They have awesome foil pressed cards (meaning shimmer and GOLD).

They have ornament cards that can be hung on your tree for years to come. Wouldn’t that be a fun tradition each year?

Yeti or Not Ornament Card From Minted | www.rhapsodyinrooms.com

Isn’t that hilarious and nerdy-delightful?! They have more serious ones but I had to share this one. A pun is always a good idea on a card (or anytime really).

I absolutely adore these minibook cards too! So many possibilities and personalization possible. Plus, to send a book as your card? That’s just cool.

If you want to go a little more casual you can use a postcard style. I definitely still love sending postcards to my family when I’m on trips, so I like this option a lot.

Holiday Postcards from Minted |www.rhapsodyinrooms.com

The last non-traditional option I found are these petite cards. I mean, everything is cuter when it’s small, right? #plightofthetallgirls But gosh darn it, these are adorable.

Petite Cards from Minted | www.rhapsodyinrooms.com

With all of these card options you can still personalize them to max out their cheery message straight from you heart. Plus, you can upload addresses so they are beautifully typed on the envelopes!

So spread a little holiday spirit by making your card personal, joyful, and  full of love so that when the recipient opens that card it will explode with happiness and glitter (yup, that’s my tradition – people have learned to open my cards over a trash can because GLITTER).

So what type of holiday card do you like sending out? Any of these catch your eye?

This holiday is sponsored by Minted. All opinions are my own.

  • I love receiving photo cards but I also love beautiful cards with great graphics like the ones you’ve shared from Minted.

Last year was the first year that I didn’t send cards since 1991 and it made me sad. I need to be better this year!ReplyCancel

    • Oh no! That’s sad it was the first year you missed! You should send cards with a picture of your new lake house on it! That would be so much fun!ReplyCancel

Sometimes it grosses me out when I think about all the other people who have lived in my apartment. I trust it because of the vigorous cleaning required between each tenant by my property management company. However, you still know that many, many people have called this place home.

When I moved in I was really impressed with how meticulously clean it was. I still cleaned it before I moved in for peace of mind, and I’ve been happy for the past year.

However, my bathroom and kitchen have this…interesting….linoleum flooring pattern that I’ve noticed hides way too much. No matter how much I have mopped and scrubbed, my bathroom had some discolored places on it. After looking at it recently, I decided that was gross (oh you know, after I’ve been living with it for 11 months).

I’ve always wanted a steam cleaner for floors, and I knew this was the perfect time to try something to try to get rid of those dark spots.

My HomeRight Steam Machine for Cleaning Bathrooms | www.rhapsodyinrooms.com

I picked the HomeRight SteamMachine Plus. I picked this one because:

  1. I’ve worked with HomeRight products before (my painted rug) and know they are quality.
  2. It not only is a floor steam cleaner with a handle but it becomes a handheld with lots of attachments.

My HomeRight Steam Machine for Cleaning Bathrooms | www.rhapsodyinrooms.comMy HomeRight Steam Machine for Cleaning Bathrooms | www.rhapsodyinrooms.comMy HomeRight Steam Machine for Cleaning Bathrooms | www.rhapsodyinrooms.com

When I got it, it was easy to put together and easy to use. I immediately got to steaming the floors in the upright position. I definitely saw that it was cleaning the floor well and was picking up all sorts of grime and hair.

I saw the dark spots reduce but they were still there, so I need it was time to use the handheld and the more aggressive brush attachments.

Oh my goodness, I was amazed at how it worked! With minimal scrubbing and effort those spots were gone! Although, it did get steamy; hence, no jacket in the second picture. 🙂

It must have been caked on dirt built up for years but now it is gone! The more I looked, the more white lines were grey. I am now proud to say that they are all white now!

This is where it was the worst! Just caked on – now gone!

My HomeRight Steam Machine for Cleaning Bathrooms | www.rhapsodyinrooms.com

The corners are where it was worst – and now is spotless! A little hard to tell in pictures with this busy pattern but it really makes a difference in person! Plus, I can feel the clean on my bare feet. I know, I know, call me crazy but it’s true!

My HomeRight Steam Machine for Cleaning Bathrooms | www.rhapsodyinrooms.com

Since I was on such a steam cleaning kick in the bathroom, I decided to tackle the shower too. My shower has that grippy stuff attached to the bottom, and I was always curious how clean that can really get with sprays (since you can’t scrub in between the raised portions).

My HomeRight Steam Machine for Cleaning Bathrooms | www.rhapsodyinrooms.com

I used the handheld with the brush attachment again and literally saw dirt wash away from the bottom! It’s really hard to tell with pictures, but I was pleased with how it worked. Plus, I was also able to get rid of some built up mildew/shower scum on the sides.

I am SO happy with how easy this was – and the results are great! You can see how grimy the floor was with the removable and washable (!!) mop pad. That doesn’t even include all the dust and hair it got up that I decided not to show here because…gross.

HomeRight Steam Machine Plus Giveaway

I love it so much I want to share one with you! HomeRight is giving a SteamMachine Plus away!

Just post a comment below telling me where you would use it by Monday, October 26 at 11:59pm EST.

Thank you to HomeRight for sponsoring this post and helping me actually get my bathroom clean! All opinions are all my own.

  • I could see in the pictures the difference in the grout lines in the vinyl. I also know what you mean when you say that you could feel how clean it felt with your feet.

I could really use this at the lake where we will have two bathrooms with vinyl flooring and the rest laminate. I’m sure it will get quite dirty, especially until our grass starts growing.ReplyCancel

    • Yes, you really can see how white the laminate got on the grout lines part. Yay! Makes me feel better about my bathroom. 🙂 This would be awesome for your lakehouse!ReplyCancel

    • Yes! You really can see the difference on the white parts. Makes me feel so much better about my bathroom! 🙂 I definitely think this would be great for your lakehouse!ReplyCancel

  • OMG I am so glad you put this post up. I have a funky time getting the floor in my bathroom clean along with my shower floor. I have the raised bumpy things as well and it is so hard to keep clean. I am so wanting one of these. I would certainly use it in both of my bathrooms since they have the same flooring and tub bottom. I wonder if it could also be used for spot cleaning carpet? The endless possibilities for using this steamer.

Thank you for sharing. I am super excited to check this product out now.

    • I’m so glad you found this helpful! It sounds like it would be great for your bathroom for sure! And yes, it works for carpets! It actually comes with an carpet attachment to help it slide over it.ReplyCancel

  • Clelie Steckel

I would love to use the home right steammachine plus on my the bathroom and kitchen floors in my new apartment! It’s an older home (built in the 1930s) and I know that linoleum could use a good cleaning. Also, we have similarly patterned (a.k.a. “interesting”) floors. 😉ReplyCancel

    • Ooo your place sounds so cool! I can’t wait to see it!! Especially those interesting floors! 😉ReplyCancel

  • Our home was a foreclosure that had been vacant for three years, so it needed some SERIOUS cleaning once we got our keys! We actually spent a month cleaning, painting, prepping and fixing before we moved in, but there are still places I know need a good scrubbing.

I would definitely use this in the kitchen, where the linoleum floor has seen better days! Glad you found something that worked well for you.ReplyCancel

    • Wow! You definitely put some backbreaking work into your home before you got to move in and enjoy! This would hopefully make cleaning those floors easier!ReplyCancel

  • Deb Belohlavy

I would use same as you. Moved from house to apt about 2 months ago and the floor are gross throughout. Would love to be able to walk barefoot…ReplyCancel

    • You SO need this. It’s important to be able to walk barefoot at home!ReplyCancel

  • Kim

Hah! With 3 kids, a dog, 3 cats and lovely Virginia red clay being tracked into my house daily, where wouldn’t I use it??! I am especially curious to know if it would clean the grout between the kitchen floor tiles well! Thanks for this opportunity!ReplyCancel

    • Wow! You would get some great use out of it! I love Virginia but that clay, right?! I definitely think it would work great with grout. The first time you may need to get the attachments out and scrub though. They would definitely get into that grime in the grout.ReplyCancel

  • Dorothy McG

Megan, I would use it in my first floor bathroom shower. We had the shower tiled about 15 years ago. They are still pretty but the grout is almost grey and has to be bleached regularly. I have heard that the HomeRight steam cleaner does a great job on bathroom grout. Thanks for the opportunity!ReplyCancel

    • Ooo that sounds like a great use for it. If it made for less bleaching of tile that would be a total win!ReplyCancel

  • Deb

I would use it on both bathrooms. I live with my senior citizen father of 93 years old. Would be nice to clean up the bathroom floors after they were soiled! Kitchen as well. The machine sounds convincing!ReplyCancel

    • It is a really good machine! Sounds like it would really help you out!ReplyCancel

  • Carol

Eww. That shower was pretty gross. Looks good now. Would love one of those steam cleaners.ReplyCancel

  • Carol

That orange stuff in your shower is mold and soap scum. All you need to do is clean it once a week with comet bathroom spray cleaner.ReplyCancel

  • Candy Walsh

WOW! That thing is a BEAST! To be honest, my entire house could use it right now! For the past couple of months I have really let things go and I used to be major OCD about cleaning top to bottom once a week. But in the past several years I’ve developed several chronic pain diseases and other health issues and I’m only 49 yrs old. So it’s very hard not to do things like I used to. But just to be able to keep my floors clean enough to walk without slippers would be awesome!!
The good Lord willing I’ll be keeping my first grandbaby who’s due in December when my daughter goes back to work, so it would be nice to keep it nice and shiny clean for him.
Thanks so much for the opportunity!ReplyCancel

    • Hi Candy! I’m so sorry to hear about your health problems. Hopefully you are on the upward swing now. And how exciting you might be able to keep your new grand baby! That makes everything better! I can imagine all the messes he will make that this would help out with! 🙂ReplyCancel

  • Debbie

Megan, I can really see the difference in your floors! Once a year I pay to have our grout steam cleaned. This would save money! I would also try it on our molded shower floor. Sounds like it could work wonders. Thanks for sharing!ReplyCancel

    • I bet this could really help your grout stay clean all year. Maybe you wouldn’t have to pay to get them cleaned. That would be awesome!!ReplyCancel

  • Aubrey Claybrook

This is amazing! We just bought a house and I would LOVE something like this to clean the floors 🙂ReplyCancel

    • Hi Aubrey! I first want to say, I love your name! My last name is Aubrey and love it as a first name. I hope to pass it on to my someday children one day. 🙂 Anyways, this sounds like it would be great for your new house!ReplyCancel

      • Aubrey Claybrook

Haha that is awesome it’s your last name…I’ve never heard it as a last name before, I love it! I’m crossing my fingers I can win this 🙂 With our new house, of course we can’t change out the flooring immediately and I’m a clean freak hahaReplyCancel

        • I totally get that with floors! I can’t believe it took me so long to be so thorough. You’re good to get on it first thing!

I never really heard of Aubrey as a first name until a couple of years ago! Just goes to show… 🙂ReplyCancel

  • Margaret McRae Davis

I’m just seeing this; always a day late and a dollar short!!!!!ReplyCancel

    • Margaret McRae Davis

Of course, IF I had entered in time and won, I would have used it to clean bathroom and kitchen floors.ReplyCancel

    • Haha. You’re too funny! Sorry you missed the giveaway!ReplyCancel

  • Sandy

I would definitely use it in the bathrooms and all my tile floorsReplyCancel

The other day I was going on a walk, getting bogged down in the details of my life. The useless emotions, certain states of things, and things that I have let occupy my mind far too much of the time.

Girl in Forest

I think it was realizing that I was going over and over small details that felt so limiting that made me realize that I needed to open up my mind.

I needed to let myself believe in the extraordinary.

To recognize that my life not only can be extraordinary, but that it SHOULD be extraordinary….and so should yours.

If we let ourselves get bogged down in the details, then we are choosing to live a life less than extraordinary.

But when we pledge to ourselves that we will live an extraordinary life, possibilities open. They may not be there right away, but the important part is that your mind is open to it. That you have changed your mindset about life.

Live an Extraordinary Life

That is the first step. Opening your mind to the extraordinary and letting the ordinary things be a part of your life but not define your life.

You are meant to be extraordinary. I feel that so deeply for everyone.

You have your own set of unique qualities only you possess. That is extraordinary and are meant for extraordinary things.

Open your mind to this expanded view of life and let in the extraordinary.

Live an Extraordinary Life
