My name is Megan, and I used to be a cardio-aholic. I bought into the cardio craze hook, line, and sinker, like most American women who are continually striving for the unattainable body. Cardio is supposed to be what it’s all about. Just burn, burn, burn calories to get the perfect body.

Yet, I have never had the perfect body. As soon as I hit puberty in high school I gained quite a few pounds, even while intensely training in cross country and then in volleyball. Talk about cardio for those two sports, and I still struggled daily with feeling fit and thin. It was something I could never achieve, but I felt if I just kept booking miles running or on the elliptical machine one day I would be thin like I wanted to be.

In college I found myself gaining weight while still spending an hour a day on the elliptical machine. It wasn’t until a glorious summer between my junior and senior year in college that I dropped the weight. How did I do it? By balance and happiness. I lost about 20-30 pounds in a summer without even realizing it – and while eating dessert every day.

Exercise to be fit, not skinny | www.rhapsodyinrooms.com

I learned that summer very simple and obvious things that work:

  1. Only eat when you are hungry.
  2. Exercise is important.
  3. Eat a balanced diet.
  4. Love yourself first and foremost.
  5. Contentment is the key to weight loss.

Since then it’s been fairly simple to maintain the weight. I figured out my diet and had regular exercise (I bought an elliptical machine with money given to me for college graduation). I kept up the cardio routine followed by light weights afterwards.

That was, until I was physically unable to do cardio when I fractured my ankle. At that point I turned to a light weight lifting routine that helped keep me in shape during those 8-10 weeks when I could barely walk.

When the walking boot came off I had a life changing realization and one of those elements included joining a gym.

I remember that first day I walked into the gym; I eagerly went to my comfort zone on the elliptical machine. I nervously would check out the weight area in the mirrors behind me where all the boys were lifting heavy weights, trying to decide if I had the guts to go join them. That’s also when I noticed the gym divide. The girls were on the cardio machines and the boys were weight lifting. That day I did dabble on a few weight machines after a 45 minute elliptical workout, but it wasn’t much – maybe 15 minutes of weights.

The next day I talked with my workout buddy co-worker who is into lifting weights BIG TIME. That day he said something that changed me. He said, “Megan, I challenge you to not even touch a cardio machine today at the gym. You need to weight lift. You don’t need to try to lose weight; you need to strength train.”

I gave him all the lame excuses of being intimidated of the big weight lifting boys and of course I still need to lose weight – because I’m a girl and always want to be skinnier (stupid mindset).

But I did it. I put back my shoulders when I got to the gym and walked back there with the boys. Sure, I felt like an imposter and a doofus at times (I seriously got a bruise from one of the machines when it fell on me) but I did it. I felt great afterwards.

Then I took to researching weight lifting for women and hit upon this site with a great workout plan for women. I liked how it was pretty basic with moves that I knew I could do in my gym. Plus, it had an attainable goal of just trying it for 12 weeks.

Well, I would love to announce that I have hit those 12 weeks…and am never going back to being a cardio junky. I can honestly say I have never felt overall stronger or more fit in my life – even better than when I used to run 5 times a week!

Work Hard, Feel Good | www.rhapsodyinrooms.com

So I am here to say to all of you women – walk away from the cardio machines. Let us all unite on weight lifting.

Yes, there is a time for cardio, and it is very important. Heck, I started incorporating it into my routine during the third month. However, I think you will be surprised though how 30-45 minutes of weight lifting can feel like the toughest and most efficient workout ever.

I want to share with you my 12 week workout (that I continue to go strong with now) and some tips that I found while delving into it.

Weeks 1-4

Weeks 5-8

My Women

Weeks 9-12

My Women

Tips I Have Learned Along the Way:

  • Drink a protein shake within 30 minutes of your post workout. I drink this protein shake in a blender bottle and it is delicious! (affiliate links)
  • Once I hit the third round with heavier weights, I found that I needed to really pay attention to my pre-workout preparation. About an hour before my workout I start drinking a lot of water (even though I drink it all day as much as possible) and eat a snack of an apple or trail mix.
  • Warm-up is essential! Around the third month I added in…cardio! Gasp! But it gets me loose and warm. I usually spend about 10-20 minutes on the treadmill – walking or running, depending on how I am feeling that day. I stretch before and after, and once again after my weight lifting.
  • Remember to drink plenty of water during your workout.
  • If you are stationary for the most of the day (desk jobs, I’m looking at you), you may find your neck and shoulders stiff, which can effect your workout. I try and stretch out my neck and shoulders throughout the day and throughout my workout.
  • Don’t be intimidated by the boys taking up all the room in the weight area. Gather all the confidence you have and just sit right down on the bench next to them and do your thing. You will end up gaining respect from them when they see your commitment and dedication to lifting. Then you get welcomed into the weight lifting group. I now have a few regular weight lifting guy buddies. I’ve made it.

I’d love to share anything and everything about my experience and want to encourage women to get on out there and weight lift too! If you have any questions or I’ve missed something, please ask!

Also, here is my fitness Pinterest board where I pin workouts and inspirational quotes.

Lastly, you are beautiful inside and out, right now. Don’t ever doubt yourself. After all this fitness, food, and weight lifting talk, I wanted to ensure that I ended all this making sure you know, know, know you are wonderful just the way you are. NEVER compare yourself with someone else.

PS – If you are actively trying to lose weight, you should probably still be doing cardio with the weight lifting. Once you’ve reached your optimal weight you can take it down to what I’ve described above. Really, it all comes down to what works for you.

  • Ok — so I’ve lost 25 lbs and I’m pretty close to my goal weight. I’m ready to start lifting weights and have begun, however inconsistently. My question is HOW much weight do I start with? Is there a magic number or do I just randomly pick based on if I can lift it?ReplyCancel

    • Woohoo! Way to go on losing those 25 pounds; that’s awesome! I definitely think you will benefit from lifting weights. A word of caution though – don’t fixate of what you weigh once you start lifting. You may gain weight, but the good kind – muscle not fat. I’ve gained about 5-10 pounds since I started lifting. If you get serious about lifting and want to measure your results, perhaps measure your waist inches. I think you will definitely see a result there – and all over!

My advice as to how much weight to start lifting is really just trial and error. It is different for each person. Start small and work up. It needs to be challenging, but if you can’t get more than a rep or two than it’s too much. I usually gauge my weight that by the end of my sets I should barely be able to get those last reps in. The heavier weights are what really help you build muscle. But be cautious too; you don’t want to hurt yourself! Don’t worry about how small you start either; just keep at it and you will get to heavier weights. Keep me posted as to how it goes for you!ReplyCancel

Do you ever find yourself caring about something so deeply, feeling so impassioned by it that it makes you cry?

Well, that’s me.

In general I feel pretty deeply in about pretty much everything, but every once in a while sometimes I just feel so much I cry.

They aren’t tears of happiness or sadness; they are just feelings so overwhelming that they literally spill over in tears.

This is how I feel when I think about what I want to do in my life. I’ve searched for the answer to, “If you could do anything with your life, what would it be?”

It’s actually a question I’ve struggled with quite a long time. I remember going to college without a clue as to what I wanted to major in or do as a career. It’s the natural thing that everyone asked you as a senior in high school. Sorry, no answer for you.

Welcome to school |www.rhapsodyinrooms.com

Thankfully, my college had an awesome First Year Experience (FYE) program. That first week of freshman orientation we had opportunities to go around and be introduced to all the different majors and learn about the classes and professors. I was naturally inclined to the communications major and when I went there, I immediately knew that I had found my home. Classes included public speaking, news writing, photography, feature writing, public relations, and so much more.

As a natural communicator – or at least a naturally expressive chatty person – this seemed like a really good fit for me.

And it was. It was an awesome four year education that made me a good public speaker and writer. Even if I never did anything in my major I think those two skills are essential in every career and just in life in general.

Yet, about junior year hit in college and the questions started coming at me again: what are you going to do after college? AHH! I had picked a major; wasn’t that enough?

No, apparently now I’m expected to do something with it. Hmm..that’s interesting.

My junior year was also the most amazing year of college when I was able to go on an abroad and spend 10 weeks in China. Life changing, is all I can say. I could fill a book about how this trip was transformational – and how amazing and welcoming the people of China are. One aspect of the trip that was so life changing for me was an intensive research paper I did. I decided to do it on non-governmental agencies (NGO’s) in China. That really made for an interesting paper in a communist country – and life experience. I visited various NGOs in the country and talked with their founders. The one thing I found across the board? Passionate people working tirelessly to help people.

Whoa. That’s where it all changed for me. I suddenly knew what I wanted to do: work for a non-profit so I could help people.

Career Get Started Now | www.rhapsodyinrooms.com

That’s exactly what I did. My senior year I began applying to every non-profit job I found. Then, when I got home, I set-up informational interviews with every non-profit in my town. I eventually landed a job at the children’s museum where I spent my first two years, shockingly, using my degree as the Marketing and Special Events Coordinator.

From there I jumped over to a quasi-governmental organization, a local water authority, as the Communications Coordinator. It was slightly different than a non-profit but it was still providing an essential service to the community.

A couple years in though, that restless feeling came back. That niggling question was back: “What do I want to do with my life?”

For me it took simplifying that question to find my true answer. My answer was so simple: I want to help people. I want to help them understand that they are so worthwhile, they are wanted, they are enough. That they are amazing in their own special and unique way.

Helping hands | www.rhapsodyinrooms.com

No, this is not an exact job, but it is all I want to commit my life to. The interesting thing about finding such a simple but meaningful answer to that question, is that I realized I could start that life mission any place I was. It isn’t a job description but a job mentality. It’s something I can commit to and bring with me anywhere.

Yes, ultimately I would love to spend my days writing and speaking with people to help them feel the value they bring to the world. To help lift them up everyday and realize their own incredible being.

I’ve started that here on the blog and it has brought a feeling like none ever I’ve ever had. I’ve never felt so committed, so inspired, so passionate, so invigorated about anything I’ve ever done. I feel like my soul overflows with thoughts, words, and feelings that I want to spread around to the world. Words that will make you feel absolutely surrounded with love and support. Words that will bring you joy and understanding. Or just words that make you realize you are not alone.

It is when these thoughts, feelings, and words take me over, and I just feel electric. I just feel so much that the tears naturally follow. It is my biggest desire bubbling over, and I actually thrum with the need to continue this journey of committing every day to helping people feel their value, to feel that they are enough. It’s the most empowering and exciting feeling I have ever had – and I want you to have that too.

I encourage you to really get down to the feeling of what you want out of life. It’s not necessarily a job name or career field. Instead, what is it that you simply want to accomplish at the end of the day? When you find that answer, that’s when you find your true purpose in life.

Thank goodness for bright, patterned clothes to make drab, rainy days better, right?

Some people like to dress in the spirit of the weather – darker colors in the rain and cold, brighter colors for the sunshine and warmth! Well, I like to dress in happy, bright colors all the time. You need color the most in the drab times. At least that’s what I’m doing as we enter into what seems like endless rain. Geesh, I know we had a drought and all, but that’s a lot of rain.

Anyways, back to clothes. The bright spot of this rainy weekend was trying on my new box of Stitch Fix clothing. Yay, yay, yay! Bright colors and patterns!!

I requested my stylist Lauren again this month because I feel like she has gotten my style more than any other stylist I’ve had. She always delivers on unique pieces with interesting details, bedazzlements, and patterns.

My September Stitch Fix Review | www.rhapsodyinrooms.com

Just a quick recap, stitch fix is a personal stylist company that hand picks 5 items based on your style and size. You get assigned your own stylist, and she gets to know your style based on your pinterest fashion board, style profile, and feedback you leave on your previous fixes. In turn she hand picks out pieces she think will make you look – and feel – great and sends them to you along with styling advice and a personal note. Love that part so much!

For this box I requested more pants (they were out of longs so that was a no go), a fall jacket (included), and a nice skirt or dress for fall (included). Here’s what I thought of the five pieces sent my way.

41Hawthorn Gideon Polka Dot Sweater

My-September-Stitch-Fix-Review-41-Hawthorn-Gideon-Polka-Dot-Sweater

There is a reason I began with this piece. Basically, it’s because I love it, and I don’t want to take it off. Cold, dreary weather really helped make this decision since it is exactly what I wanted to wear at that moment. It is the perfect softness, which is so important with a sweater. I’ve bought many an itchy sweater to never be worn because who has time to itch all day?

My-September-Stitch-Fix-Review-41-Hawthorn-Gideon-Polka-Dot-Sweater

Another bright side of this sweater is that it is long in the arms and torso. I can almost never find sweaters that are long enough. I’m the classic push up the sleeves to the elbow because they look like I outgrew them in arms.

Plus, polka dots are always a good idea.

Oh pretty neckline, I love you. I also love the material, the navy, and oh the hourglass shape you give me.

My-September-Stitch-Fix-Review-Brixon-Ivy-Donna-Embellsihed-Neckline-Blouse

Who knew a top could be that nice to your waist? That is, until you turn around. Yup, now look at that shape. That’s a no go. Who wants a back poof? No one, that’s who. Back poof, you saved my budget but I am still sad to return you.

You darling pattern you. How interesting to be on a skirt. Plus, a pencil skirt, which I adore with all my heart.

My-September-Stitch-Fix-Review-Renee-C-Marcy-Skirt

Unfortunately I think this goes a little Kim K. (in the sense it is SO form fitting that it really shouldn’t be worn in public). This is a super stretchy skirt but I think it runs small. It is a medium but I would have gone up to a large if I wanted to keep it.

Fate Dalvik Printed Moto Jacket

Strike two on a fall jacket. But once again, so close. I almost kept this jacket, that is, if I could have gotten a medium.

My-September-Stitch-Fix-Review-Fate-Dalvik-Printed-Moto-Jacket

At the end of the day, no matter how much I liked the asymmetrical zipper and subtle pattern, I didn’t think it was the perfect fall jacket for me. It is so thin and stretchy that it wouldn’t be great for going over heavier fall layers. Plus, it looks a little too cropped on my long torso. I like jackets a little longer. However, if you are looking for a light jacket, this is it! It is so comfy and stretchy. You may want to size up though.

Pixley Lenta Cut Out Detail Blouse

Oh hi blouse I would have never picked on my own. Which is why I love Stitch Fix. Keep sending stuff like this, even though I didn’t keep it.

My-September-Stitch-Fix-Review-Pixley-Lenta-Cut-Out-Detail-Blouse

First of all, the color, right?! It’s stupendous and now I think I should wear this color every day. The cut out details are so beautiful too. How unique is this piece too? The open sides? It’s fun but I didn’t love it enough to keep it.

First, it’s fall and I didn’t feel like spending money on something I couldn’t wear for a while. Also, it’s not very flattering either. So blousey! All I can picture is me getting attacked in the face by it while walking outside in the wind.

Bonus! Here’s the video of me trying everything on and talking about what I like/dislike about each item.

  • Isn’t Stitch Fix day the best? I’ve been waiting for this post to see what you got for September! I love the sweater you kept and know that you’ll wear it a lot this fall and winter. The poof on the back of that top that looked so good from the front was quite odd. I can’t imagine that anyone would want to keep that after trying it on. Maybe next month you will finally get a jacket that fits correctly. This one is a cute style. I’ve heard that Stitch Fix will exchange sizes if you ask them.ReplyCancel

Sometimes it hard to not look around longingly at everyone’s else’s lives and happiness and wish that were you.

  • The happy couple who can’t keep their hands off each other.
  • The 25 year old who started a business that just made a million dollar profit.
  • The glowing newlyweds on their honeymoon in Europe.
  • The baby announcement that has a man jumping up eagerly and calling his mother to share the exciting news.
  • The couple with four kids running around who are still enamored with each other and actively working on their marriage.
  • The globetrotter friend who is in a different country each month, posing with incredibly beautiful backgrounds in pictures.
  • The older couple who still hold hands.
  • The friend you just got a huge promotion.

Yes, all these situations are seen by your eyes in a golden halo, without knowing the truth behind them and all the hardships that are there as well.

Sometimes you just want what you see so much.

That’s the time to tell yourself: my journey is not their journey.

My Journey is not Your Journey | www.rhapsodyinrooms.com

That’s right. You may want that life you see, but that’s not supposed to be your journey. Sure, you may want those things and you may get those things one day, but today that is not your day to live that journey.

Today is your day to live your journey. And who knows, someone else may be looking at your life all rosy-like wishing they were living your journey.

My Journey is not Your Journey | www.rhapsodyinrooms.com

So stop looking around and wishing you could live everyone else’s lives and take a good look at your own. This is your journey to take you on your own unique adventure. Don’t wish that away for living a life you think you should.

It’s time to take up our own journey and live the life we were meant to have, the one we are having right now.

A few weeks ago I decided I needed to get out of town and quite literally invited myself to one of my friend’s house in Virginia Beach for the weekend. Thankfully, I have the best friends ever, and we had a good laugh when I got there as we discussed how I had invited myself. Friends understand. 🙂

Although I went to the Virginia Beach area, my bathing suit stayed in my suitcase. Instead I saw the inside of a craft store for a while, watched a lot of movies, ate way too much dessert, and had an all around good time.

Being the crazy kids that we are, we thought a good time for Saturday meant going to the craft store and making wreaths. And it was quite the good time! 🙂

My Fall Jewel Toned Wreath | www.rhapsodyinrooms.com

I wanted to make a fall wreath, but don’t love the traditional fall colors for my decor. You don’t see much red or orange in this blue and green household. I decided to embrace that and make something that I love and is true to me. I decided to buy a few flowers in jewel tones as my nod towards fall.

My Fall Jewel Toned Wreath | www.rhapsodyinrooms.com

All-in-all I kept my wreath pretty simple – which is how I like them these days.

I positioned the three flowers (three is always a good idea) at around the 3 -5 position as the clock hands go.

Then after LOTS AND LOTS of playing around with the ribbon (oh my, over an hour of trial and error with a quick break of laying on the floor, because, well that’s just what I do) I decided to do a simple ribbon. [Remember my fight with ribbon on my Christmas glitter wreath?!]

We both wanted to put our monogram on the wreath but couldn’t find any letters that we liked. Oh well, they still stand alone. The letters can always be added later.

Here we are with our finished products.

I love wreaths as an apartment dweller since there isn’t much I can  do to the exterior of my home. Boy, would I love to paint that door (what a nondescript color, right?) but alas, they all need to stay cohesively blah. So up goes a wreath all year round!
